30 30's for 30 Days Away

Today is September 27th, which means the Spartan Super MW is 30 days away. I woke up at 6am ready to rock it today. I didn't even hit the snooze. I was really excited for today's TOD. As a twisted soul, I decided to "celebrate" with a collection of 30 exercises to be done 30 times. Number 1 on the list is a 3 mile run. Yes, I know that it is not a 30, but my run was just over 3 miles and lasted just over 30 minutes. So it counts.

Here we go!!!
  1. 3 Mile Run
  2. 30 Pull ups - All assisted, and all sucked
  3. 30 Squats
  4. 30 Curls
  5. 30 Burpees
  6. 30 Crunches
  7. 30 Leg Lifts
  8. 30 Push ups
  9. 30 Mountain Climbers
  10. 30 Frog Jumps
  11. 30 Long Jumps
  12. 30 Russian Ab Twists
  13. 30 Bear Crawls
  14. 30 Cleans - Sucked
  15. 30 Calf Raises
  16. 30 KB Snatches
  17. 30 Tri Rows
  18. 30 Jumping Jacks
  19. 30 Alpine Jacks
  20. 30 Seal Jacks
  21. 30 Dead Lifts
  22. 30 Plank Dumb Bell Drag - REALLY SUCKED
  23. 30 Chest Ball Throws
  24. 30 Man Makers = Man Breakers
  25. 30 Chair to Chair Tri Dips (Coffee table to Kitchen chair)
  26. 30 V Sit ups
  27. 30 KB Swings
  28. 30 Tire Sledge
  29. 30 Walking Lunges
  30. 3 Rope Climbs - Sub'ed 30 squats because I cut my thumb pretty good cutting potatoes last night.
This girl got 'em all done in about an hour. I should clarify, 2-30 in about an hour. I'm not that Beastly. Yet. Several times I had to take a break because I was on the verge of puking. Jon had to ask me if I was okay at one point. I nodded "Yes," and kept going.

As far as the run part: When I woke, it was raining, so while getting my lunch and breakfast together, I strategized about my outfit and my iTouch. I had bought a Saucony Weather Proof runner's jacket at my favorite store, Marshalls, for just this situation. Finally, I could put it to the test. I put my iTouch in a ziploc baggy and slit a small hole in it for my headphones. This I kept in an inside pocket of my jacket. Worked like a charm. My amazing Nike+ SportWatch GPS clocked my 5k at 28:45. Fastest, but also first with the watch, road 5k. Its under 30 minutes, which makes me very happy. Oh, and my New Balance shoes felt great. Zero knee pain.

Total Distance: 3.3 Miles
Total Time: 30:33

Couldn't have said it better.

WOD to TOD

From here on out I will be performing TOD's (Training of the Day), and not WOD's. The reason being, I have an event, an end goal that I am training for, therefore TOD's.

Yesterday, I did a quick round of my arm circuit. Last night, after going to dinner, Jon and I stopped by Home Depot to pick up a bag of sand. Jon insisted that he carry it through the store, but I insisted back, that I carry it. And so went to the check out.

Once home, I put together my DIY Sandbag. Using my scale, I filled a contractor's bag with 30 lbs. of sand. Then I did two layers of duck tape. The outer layer, hot pink. Can't help it, its the girly side of me.

Tonight, I took my sandbag out. I stuck it in a military dry bag which I bought from the Surplus store for a couple of bucks. Then, I marched. I marched to the park. Kids were having practice on the soccer field, so I did work next to it. First, throw the bag, then drop to push up, dead lift up, and repeat. Then, I did walking lunges with it headed the other direction. Also, did some squats, and chest presses. Then I hiked back. Somewhere along the way, my contractor bag broke. Next time, I'll have to double bag.

Eats: Classic Israeli Salad over Quinoa with Feta

Hands down, this is my favorite lunch. Its super easy to make and it will last me 3 days. Just a lot of chopping. Its all whole foods consisting of lots of veggies and the super food, quinoa. Quinoa is packed full of protein, iron, and fiber, which makes for a great meatless lunch. There is also a ton of parsley in the salad which is great for joint health. To store the parsley for longevity, store it upright in a glass container with a bit of water and covered with the produce bag. I use my dressing pitcher. The feta puts it over the top. I mean, let's face it, Feta makes everything Betta!

Basically, I take the lunch with me in parts. I prepare 1 dry cup of quinoa according to package directions and store it in one container. The salad goes into another. I dice a Roma tomato every morning and bring it in a little container to toss in the salad. I never put tomatoes in the fridge because it makes them meally and not so tasty. So I just keep my little container in my lunch bag until ready to eat. Finally, I bring a container of feta to top the salad.

Classic Israeli Salad
Adapted from Vegetarian Times
  • 1/2 Cucumber Diced
  • 1/2 Yellow Bell Pepper Diced
  • 2/3 Cup Chopped Parsley
  • 2 tsp. EVOO
  • 3 Tbsp. Green Onion Chopped (sub Yellow onion rinsed)
  • 2 tsp. Lemon Juice
  • 1 Roma Tomato (each day)

Weekend Warrior

I kicked ass this weekend. No other way to say it. Over 20 miles logged. My longest run ever on Saturday, followed by 2,600 stairs on Sunday. It was an amazing training weekend. The weather was perfect, the dirt was soft from the recent rain, and my body carried me through.

Friday evening I had to get in a work out since I over slept that morning. I got home and put on my road shoes and Nike+ SportWatch GPS. I ran the 1.13 miles over to the park, which was also my fastest mile to date (8:43). At the park I proceeded to do:

20 Inverted Pull ups
30 Burpees
30 Tri Dips
50 Squats
20 Push ups
1 Minute plank
Soccer field walking lunges (79)

10 bear crawls, 5 push ups (quickly becomes girl push ups) (full field)
Frog Jumps (full field)
Long Jumps (full field)
High Knees (full field)
Butt Kicks (full field)

Soccer field walking lunges
1 Minute Plank
20 Push ups
50 Squats
20 Tri Dips
30 Burpees
20 Inverted Pull ups

Then I continued on my run. It was a tough run. I need to get new road shoes, and my knees reminded me of this the whole way. So, definitely a bit of walking.

Total Distance: 5.98 miles
Time: 1:30:22

Saturday, I ran at Mt. Airy. I had been looking forward to this run all week. Nothing beats a few hours in the forest where its just your shoes hitting the dirt. I absolutely love trail running. I wish I had known this was a real sport years ago. Its so much more fun than road running and much easier on the body. I went twice as far on Saturday than Friday, but with zero knee pain afterwards. This is the difference between pounding pavement and running trails.

With my Nike+ SportWatch and CamelBak, I headed into the woods. Forgot my iTouch and headphones. Hike back to the car. Okay, let's try this again. Ran my usual trail. Once to the Stone Steps, I went up the first time with nothing. At the top, low and behold, my log and rock were still there. So, I picked up Log for a lap. Then, Rocky Balboa, Log again, and Rocky Balboa. A total of 5 times up and down those sketchy stairs. I had also bought some Gu's and Bloks to practice eating on my long runs. I planned to eat one every hour so I don't wear out before eating. The Gu's always freaked me out. But I've heard great things about them, and I had a free sample so I tried it. Let me tell you, it was so good. Do you remember those Squeeze Pops you used to eat as a kid? That's what they taste like but packed with potassium, sodium, protein, and all the other stuff you need to fuel your body. My other gu thingy wasn't Gu brand. I can't remember what brand it was, but I do remember it tasted like the inside of a Lindor Truffle. So good. I think the reward of eating Gu's may be a new motivator in my training. I wasn't a fan of the Blok chews. They were way too sugary. I did my first lap which was about 6 miles and I had about an hour left of training (plan was to roam for three hours). The Tough Mudder is 12 miles, so I decided to do another lap and let my body feel 12 miles. Never have I ever gone this far. My PR is 8.43 miles earlier this summer. This was a huge jump in mileage, but I had my mind set and I went. It was tough. I experienced chafing for the first time. That sucked. I fell 3 or 4 times. Got attacked by a little dog. Scared the Bejeezus out of a woman. There were several times when I wanted to quit, but I had to tell that part of me to STFU. I would walk from time to time, but I did it. And as I was finishing that last stretch of grass to the car, my pace quickened and I got goose bumps. I pushed myself farther than I've ever been, and it felt amazing afterwards.

Total Distance: 12:06 miles
Total Time: 3:23:32

Today, the plan was to climb Nippert Stadium. But my first stop was Bob Ronker's Running Spot for new road shoes and calf sleeves. I had the guy refit me, and I ended up in a different shoe. My past 2 road shoes have been Brooks Adrenaline. He had me try on those and also the New Balance 860V2. I actually preferred the NB. To me they felt lighter, so I went with those. My calf sleeves are fun. He said I had to get funky ones since I do crazy races. Hot Pink Tie Dyed it is!

Perfect day for climbing 2600 stairs
From there I headed over to Nippert Stadium. By that time, my bladder was full. I crossed my fingers as I tried the doors to the College of Business. Open! Women's bathroom? Open! 2 for 2. Once at the stadium, I got to work. The first lap was pretty easy. I got it done in under 30 minutes. After getting through the horse shoe with little problem, I had decided to add another lap. I really wanted to push myself today since tomorrow is a rest day. My second lap, not so fun. It was rough. More rests at the top of the stairs. On the drive home, my leg would shake when I hit the brake. As I'm typing this, I have my new Zenash Compression calf sleeves on to help with recovery. Last time we did this, I was sore until Thursday. I'm hoping for a faster recovery this time.

Me Jane, You Tarzan

After several weeks of my manila rope hanging out on the floor in our living and not in a tree, we finally got it hung. Yippee! Special thanks to our amazing neighbor, Kristen, for letting me hang a rope in her tree. I approached the rope with trepidation. Kristen and I were actually talking prior to hanging the rope, and I told her I didn't think I'd be able to do it. If you recall, I tried to climb a rope attached to a cinder block in the woods a week or so ago and majorly failed.  It would just have to be one of those things I would have to work at steadily until I got it. Once hung, Jon climbed it first to test it out. He got about half way using only his arms. I, on the other hand, have been studying rope climbing on YouTube, watching videos of different techniques, and mentally going through it in my head. When it was my turn, I told Jon how I learned to create an 'S' with the rope around my feet and push up. I grabbed onto the rope, gave it a good tug, and then jumped up 'S-ing' the rope around my foot as close to my chest as possible. Aha! I was up. Okay. Push up and grab higher. Scissor kick to 'Re-S' around my foot. Repeat. It was glorious and also painful. In the future long socks or pants will be worn. I have a nice rope burn on the front of my left chin from coming down the rope. Yet this is one Spartan Obstacle I feel comfortable conquering.

This morning I decided to venture out into the cold. I checked the weather before dressing: a cool 43 degrees. Time to test out my new Under Armour Cold Compression tights that I scored at my favorite store, Marshalls. I also, got to try out my New Balance runner's cap I got from The Clymb for like $6. I also, wore my Nike+ SportWatch GPS to track my mileage. Once to the park, I did 8 hill sprints with my 30lbs weight vest counting with 4 rocks on my back bumper. I manage to do all 8 without stopping and zero water. I was also finally able to gauge how long my uphill was: .07 miles or about 112 meters. After my 8 sprints, I hit the trail for one loop around. At one point I had a cramp in my right side. My friend, Bridgid, had told me if you drop and do some quick oblique work you can squeeze out the lactic acid. I thought I would try it. I had nothing to lose. The verdict: It worked! So next time you cramp up, DROP AND GIVE ME 20!!

In other news, I will be starting an event page and team for the IN Spartan Sprint in April. I hope some, if not all of you, will join me. Below is a LivingSocial deal for a $30 registration fee. Trust me: This is a great deal. Having doubts? Don't think you can do it? Sign up!! You have 7 months to tell those doubts to Shut the Spartan Up! Aroo!

But Baby Its Cold Outside

Now that summer is over and I can pack away my bikinis for the summer, my abs have finally started to take form. Awesome. There's a reason nobody ever trains for sweater season. 'Tis the season for over indulgence and Christmas Cookies, because we can hide it all under a giant wool sweater. If we get a warm day in December, I might just have strut around in my bikini top.

The Happiest Person in the World!
Saturday night, Jon and I were attending Diner en Blanc. I was hardly prepared, so I spent Saturday shopping for White Linens, wine glasses, and food. Then I spent time preparing all of said food. When all was said and done, I had about 1.5 hours before I had to start getting ready. I went to the park to get some trail running in. No, it wasn't a few hours lost in the wood, but it was important trail time. I got started, and sure enough pain in my left foot. Not too long ago I was having pain in my right foot. Its seems it simply jumped over to my left. Woo hoo. Absolutely aggravated and not wanting to chance a serious injury, I headed home. I was only struggling with running. Walking felt fine. Basically, putting pounding pressure on it hurt. Once home, I went to the backyard.
Yelling at Jon 'cause I thought my booty was hanging out.

     Jon: "Stand up straight."
     Me: "I can't. I'm sulking."

After telling him my aggravations, I got back to work. I still had time and I needed to get a good work out/sweat in. So I started flipping my tire. Jon went in and grabbed the camera, so I finally have pictures of me being a BA Tire Flipper!!!  I did push ups off my tire and jumped in and out of it. I also did some walking lunges with a log Jon had saved for me when he cut down a tree in the back. Plus some ab work.

Sunday was spent at the Bengals game. Who Dey!!! So it became a rest day, aside from 16oz. bicep curls.

Monday, I did my arm work. Set my Gym Boss to 11 intervals (got it right this time), 1 minute active, 20 seconds rest.

  • Curls (15 lbs)
  • Plank walk up with drag (25 lbs)
  • Kettle Bell Snatch (20 lbs)
  • Other arm Kettle Bell Snatch

Tuesday, I scaled down and modified the Spartan 1500. Basically, I bumped everything down to 30 and did the jumping jacks and side kicks first so I could get a good warm up in.

The Beast Within

The Beast's Lair
My reasoning behind not going to gym since the inception of this madness is the convenience of working out at home and the joy of being outside. I must say those are great reasons, however, this morning I realized a reason that trumps both of those. Apparently, a beast resides inside of me. A big ol' gnarly, hairy beast. One, that when pushed to its limits, lets out an extremely loud growl. A beast that requires loud music to drown out some of the roaring and yelling when pushing for just one more rep. A beast that would get extremely strange stares at the gym or politely told to show respect for others and STFU. I have no intentions of caging this beast, so I will continue to let it loose in our basement where its screams are muffled by cinder block walls. Aroo!

WOD
Short and Sweet upper body interval (1 minute on, 20 seconds off, 1 round)

Tri Row (20 lbs)
x
Tri Row other arm
x
Medicine Ball Chest Throws (The beast is waking up!)
x
Pull ups (assisted and just hanging at the top)
x
Mountain Climber Push ups
x
Dead Lifts (2 15lb dumbbells)
x
Squat Press (2 15lbs. dumbbells) Beast is out!!!
x
Curls (15 lbs.)
x
Plank Walk up with dumbbell drag

Discover my circuit is actually 9 exercises, not 8, so my Gym Boss was only set for 9 bouts since one exercise is with each arm but in reality.......
*Seriously, I cannot count*

Finish with max Kettle Bell snatches for each arm.

Put the Beast to rest.

The Fighter

Let's face it. I have been in the worst shape mentally lately. It has been a struggle. I'm still working out, but it hasn't been fun like it has in the past. I feel like I'm just going through the motions and not really pushing myself. Today I think I finally had a break through.

I woke up at 6am and hit the snooze. Woke up at 6:09, turned off the alarm and zombie walked to the couch. Fell asleep. Lack of mental motivation at its finest. Finally, woke up again at 7:15 when Jon was up and moving. Already lost over an hour of training time. Luckily, I had packed my lunch last night and prepped the coffee maker, so I just had to get dressed and out the door.

Ran a mile to the park. Then I basically did a repeat of last Thursday's work out with some minor tweeks.

20 inverted pull ups on playground
30 Burpees
30 Tri Dips across picnic table benches
20 Push ups
1 Minute Plank
50 Walking Lunges

On the Soccer Field:
10 Bear Crawls then 5 push ups (1/2 field) *My new fav-perfect training for barbed wire*
Crab Walk (1/2 field)
Frog Leaps (1/2 field)
Long Jumps (1/2 field)
High Kicks (Full Field)
Butt Kicks (Full Field)

Then I continued on to finish out my 3 mile loop. After doing my work at the park, I was feeling a little Bleh. And then "The Fighter" by Gym Class Heroes came on as I was climbing a long stretch of road. Something clicked. My smile was back. That surge that sparks my body when I'm amped was flowing. I don't know what it was. But that song just hit it on the nail. I'm back in Beast Mode! Ready for the Super and the Beast. Oh, and now the Tough Mudder the weekend before the Super.

Yeah, you read that right. My friend, James, called this morning to see if I wanted to do it. Other friends of mine had asked but I declined due to the proximity of dates. However, when James called it was different. I dragged his butt onto this muddy, insane path starting with the MS Muckruckus and he did the 2 races following it. We're Muddy Buddies, so to speak. Might as well join him in his longest race (and what will now be mine) to date. I promised to stick with him the whole way and cross the finish line with him or let him beat me for once. LOL. Or maybe he'll be sticking with me. Who knows, but I am really looking forward to this race. Nothing like conquering a tough course together with close friends.

Acceptance

Female Leader  Board
Well, I think I blew my goal out of the water. I was the first female across the finish line and my time held to make me the top ranked female. So, why am I not glowing with pride? Simply put: I did not race well. It took until today (Wednesday) for me to accept the fact that I won and to be proud of my finish.

I felt like this guy on Saturday.
Not my usual self. (From Mudathlon)

To further explain: Every other OCR I have done this year, I have done with a big fat grin on my face. Smiling the entire race. Just happy to be challenging my entire body. Saturday, there was no smile. I was miserable. Now, I'm usually miserable for the first 1-2 miles. As I've told Jon, I run like a good Derby horse: Slow out the gates, but a strong finisher. After my body has warmed up and all of the kinks/lactic acid has found its way out, I feel amazing. I feel like a million bucks. I just have to fight that first mile or so. I never hit that point on Saturday. The first 2 miles or so, I pushed myself, waiting for that feeling to kick in. Never happened. So instead of feeling miserable for 1-2 miles, I felt crappy the whole time. My quads burned. My lungs burned. I had extreme flem build up. I wanted to walk.  I wanted to quit. Where the hell was the finish line? Mentally, I tried to snap out of it. I gave myself a pep talk. I clapped my hands, pumped my fists. "Here we go Nick." "You got this." "You eat hills for breakfast." Nothing. Nothing seemed to work. The only thing that kept me pushing was the occasional sighting of the female behind me. "Must beat her. Can't let her pass me."

Crossing the Bridge
So I've been reflecting on the race. I've been trying to make the case to myself as to why I should feel proud of my first place finish. I always imagined a first place finish would result in the race of my life, not a race where I didn't feel strong. I don't feel like I earned it. The next female came in 2 minutes behind me. Where were the competitors who would give me a run for my money? I shouldn't have been first. I'm part of a Spartan Chick community whose thousands of members are incredibly strong and athletic women. Where were they? I have to realize that I was the fastest female that showed up to race on Saturday. I beat every other female racer. I beat every other female racer who stayed away because of the chill and rain. I beat every other female who did not sign up. Despite not feeling good, the pain in my legs and lungs, the non-existent smile on my face, I was the fastest across the finish line.

On this morning's trail run I was finally able to find a reconciliation. I realized I am a Spartan Chick. Spartan Races want to push you past your comfort level. I was no where near close to comfortable on Saturday, but I pushed through it. I didn't quit. I didn't walk when I should be running. I kept going. I went beyond my comfort levels, and finished as the fastest female. I didn't run my best, but it was a test of my mental strength. A test I think I passed, and a grade I earned.

Mud on the Slopes

Woo Hoo! Tomorrow is the Mud Stash at Perfect North Sloes. Giggity! It will be OCR number 4 this year. I can't wait! Nothing like spending your Saturday morning sloshing through the mud, climbing ropes, running the trails, and just mucky madness.

Its a 5k, which is much shorter than the upcoming Super Spartan. The past 2 Supers have been between 10-11 miles, so I'm going to run this one twice. I then hope to climb Center Stage. Not sure if I'm allowed to do this, so I might have ask for forgiveness if I get in trouble. I'm attacking the course with the same mentality as the Mudathlon. Be Fearless and leave it all in the dirt. I am also running in the earliest heat which will help with bottle necking at obstacles and my time. My goal: Top ten female finish. Once again, I have no idea if I can actually do this, but that's my attitude. I'm hoping for a self fulfilling prophecy. If I believe it enough, it will happen.

As far as training, this week I've definitely gotten back on track. Tuesday, I worked my arms. I came up with 8 exercises that I really like. I have the list hanging in my basement. I've been maxing out on them, but they are also good for Interval training.

Last Saturday I went on the worst trail run ever. However, the good thing about trail runs is that even the worst runs are still a great hike. And with a great hike one gets to make more observations. So during my hike, I had an epiphany. Two of the obstacles almost guaranteed in a Spartan are some kind of object drag and a Hercules Pull (basically you pull on a rope that is up and over a pulley with some sort of weight on the other side). I realized, duh, we have a ton of cinder blocks and rope. All I need to do is tie rope to the cinder block, and Viola, Spartan obstacle. So Wednesday morning I headed to the park. First, 2 sets of 8 hill sprints with 30lb weight vest. And of course, cuss and shout at a deer. Then I got out my 50 lb. cinder block and carried it into the woods (this in itself, was one heck of a work out). Once on the trail, I dropped and dragged it. I made sure to switch sides so I would be 'even.' Eventually I made it to my most favorite tree in the woods. This is also the same tree that Jon and I climbed into for our engagement pics. I threw the rope up and over one of the branches and pulled. Ok. It did not budge. Basically, I was just hanging onto this rope with a cinder block laughing at me. But not all was lost. In Spartan Races, you also have to climb ropes. So I decided to make it a different obstacle and attempt to climb it. I'll go with: The diameter of the rope was too small to climb. This too was a fail. I was able to almost lock my feet into rope when I jumped up. Climbing a rope requires a ton of practice. Luckily, I ordered one on ebay and it arrived this week. Our neighbor, Kristen is letting me tie it in her tree. The plan is to hang it on Sunday. You bet there will be video!

Yesterday, I had an awesome work out. First, 1 mile jog to the park. Once there: 20 playground inverted pull ups, 30 burpees, 30 Tri dips across the picnic tables, 50 squats, 20 push ups, 1 minutish plank, 50 walking lunges.

Then, I headed up to the soccer field. Waved to my favorite Park Maintenance men. Full field bear crawl, 3/4 field crab walk (wrists not digging it), 1/2 field frog jumps, 1/2 field standing long jumps, full field high knees, full field butt kicks.

After my field work, I reversed my first set starting with the 50 walking lunges through the inverted pull ups. Finally, I tough jog home with very 't'-ed off legs.

Pull Up Challenge Results and Then Some

Note: I wrote this last week, but I'm just now posting it due to video technical difficulty

Well, I did 5 pull ups. Not all 5 at once though. But I did 5. I did 2 in a row, and finished with 3 singles. I'll take it, considering I've never in my life have been able to do any. This is a huge achievement. So much so that I've been sharing it with pretty much everyone, bartenders at Uncle Woody's, Master Mark at the PR Rec Center, our friend Jonathan, FB, and pretty much anyone who will listen to my madness. The videos are below. What they don't show is that after I did my 2 in a row, I was jumping up and down, waving my arms, and yelling, "I just did 2 pull ups!" Enjoy.

My birthday morning work out was pretty ugly. I think I was still recovering from Saturday's excessive celebrating. I was dragging, my legs hurt, and I just wasn't feeling it. I managed to do 1 full bout and then 3 bursts of the 2 round. X = Up and down the street; 1 minute active time

Wednesday, I did nothing. Felt I needed to rest. I did, however, walk up to our Rec Center to check out the weight room. Its only $25 a year to join CRC, which is much cheaper than my gym membership. The equipment is old, but they have a couple of treadmills (for extra nasty weather days), free weights, bars, and some old nautillus type machines.

Thursday night, I needed to go to my brother's to pick up my new training shirt. I needed to get back on the horse, so I stopped at White Oak Middle. 2 Sets of 8 hill sprints up the back hill with my 30 lb. weight vest. In between, I maxed out on push ups. When I couldn't do anymore big girl push ups, I did them at an incline on the hill. MUST GET BETTER!

New training shirt. Something to encourage me to go one more rep so I don't die in Texas.
